Waves

07.18.15  Another strong weather system has blown in.  Just as I was re-setting for summer, some of the valleys reached 39 degrees overnight, and we turned on the furnace this morning.  It’s supposed to warm up again in the next few days.  But, still–what an unsettled summer we are having.  My June pots of flowers have withered away from the early heat and lack of attention on my part.  It’s been enough to keep up with the geraniums, trying to keep them secure from the roaming bands of deer.  When the waves aren’t crashing against the rocks at night, I hear them snorting out on the grass, and imagine how they push their noses through the holes of the black netting I’ve used to cover the red blossoms.  Mornings, I pooper-scoop their droppings and investigate the damage they’ve done.

They are as relentless as the constantly changing weather systems.  Try as we may, resistance is really futile on all accounts.  I’m reminded of Rumi this morning:

“If you are irritated by every rub, how will you be polished?”

“Give up to grace.  The ocean takes care of each wave ’til it gets to shore.  You need more help than you know.”
